My Gay Brother Carol Lindsay 9781300866213 Books
My Gay Brother is more about the author than the brother. The first 11% of the book (Kindle version) is a rather self-serving story of the author's rotten treatment by her family on the occasion of her father's funeral. It then moves to a brief history of her brother Richard's life, followed by what appear to be complete emails between the author, Richard, their siblings, and some friends for the remainder of the book. The emails are mostly about their fight with the Carol's and Richard's siblings over their expected inheritance on the death of their father. The emails over the distribution of their inheritance occur over a period of about 4 years. Each is carefully dated, beginning in the late spring of 2007. It becomes apparent early on that David, the executor of their father's estate, is really not interested in an equitable distribution of mementos Carol and Richard feel they deserve. Such is often the legacy of having a family member designated as the executor of an estate.
This non-fiction book is promoted as intended to help the general public understand the effects of a dysfunctional family on Richard, Carol's gay brother. It really only discloses the dysfunctionality of this family and Carol's anger at her siblings. Richard's homosexuality doesn't even enter the family dynamics until well into his life. It doesn't appear to be as important to his deterioration into alcoholism as the treatment h received throughout his life from his parents and siblings.

My Gay Brother Carol Lindsay 9781300866213 Books Reviews
My Gay Brother captures the bitter rejection that a creative, sensitive, and artistic gay man (Richard) experienced in his family environment. To provide the reader with images of the surrealistic family, the author draws on her own bad experience within the abusive enclave. She then describes how she bonded to Richard and supported him emotionally and, financially as a teenager, in his early interest in music.
This was the author's intention - not to intellectually analyze the Gay Brother and his sexual preference or to fill the story with romantic liaisons, but to describe the dark clouds of first minimal tolerance, then indifference, then rejection, and, finally, outright avoidance he endured, including being excluded from his Dad's funeral.
The author described the fanatical, almost comical, family battles over trivial inheritance objects, as various members of the clan trampled over each other, as a way of displaying one aspect of the family environment - their cruelty to each other.
My Gay Brother also does an excellent job of describing Richard's artistic, theatrical, and engineering talents through email correspondence with between Richard and the author. In this way his personality, intellect, and character strengths (and flaws) are presented to the reader.
As an avid reader, after reading My Gay Brother, I found myself asking the question How would I treat someone who was "different"?
