This book and the subject matter therein should be a required course in all universities worldwide, as should Joseph Campbell's material. Overall, it virtually leaves no stone unturned with the intellectual diciplines of mankind, and it
cleans out a lot of preconceived ideas and indoctrinations, and sends them to recycle and trash bins; thus, opening up an enormous amount of the brains cpu's for more rational and creative thinking, regardless of one's lifelong endeavors. This book alone could radically change some peoples belief systems, that have endured and been distorted for over 2000 years.
Having a copy of the english edition of Hans Vaihinger's original 'Philosophy As/If' note this 28 page version of Mead's thoughts on Vaihinger does not do Vaihinger justice. How anyone could recommend this knock off version and attribute it to Vaihinger is ludicrous. Vaihinger is a rival of Kant and it is a shame he has been lost in time like so many other thinkers. If you can find a real copy of 'The As/If', buy it and enjoy. Perhaps someday a true reproduction will be forthcoming instead of someone elses thoughts on what Vaihinger may or may not have actually written and thought. At the least, the reproduction presented above is false and misleading as it is not Vaihinger's but Mead's writings and thoughts. While Mead is a great thinker in his own right, he is not Vaihinger.
Technically this review ought to have been posted as comments on the negative reviews I encountered here. However I felt the need to redress in some way the intolerable overall rating that resulted from giving a book by G.R.S. Meade one star simply because it is not a book by Hans Vaihinger. Are these people kidding? The book is titled "Vaihinger's Philosophy of the As If". That's a clue to all but the totally clueless that it is NOT by Vaihinger. Did Kant write "Kant's Critique of Pure Reason"? When you encounter an author's name in a title, you may rest assured the work is, in all probability, not by that author. This becomes even clearer when the author of the work in question is literally spelled out. So what we have here is "Vaihinger's Philosophy of the As If" by G.R.S. Meade. That could hardly be more pellucid.
If someone named Nigel Footstamp writes a critical study of "Paradise Lost" titled "Milton's Paradise Lost", are we supposed to give the book one star because it's not "Paradise Lost" by John Milton? One is tempted to use words like "idiotic". At any rate, here is a warning for all purchasers and future reviewers of this book. "Vaihinger's Philosophy of the As If" by G.R.S. Meade is not a book by Vaihinger. When purchasing it, you should not therefore expect to receive a book by Vaihinger. If you have purchased it and did not receive a book by Vaihinger, you should not be disappointed. If you are disappointed you should realize it is not the fault of G.R.S. Meade, whose work, "Vaihinger's Philosophy of the As If", should be evaluated on its own merits and not as failing to have been written by Vaihinger.
For the record, this review was not written by Vaihinger either. If you think it should have been by Vaihinger, you are free to write negative comments.
Terrible. What a rip off. They pass this off as THE book. Its nothing more than a report. When I contacted the seller they only offered a fraction of a refund after I jumped through hoops to return it to them. I decided to just throw it away. its only about 20 pages anyways. A COMPLETE misrepresentation of the REAL book. I could go on and on.... (
